War Chant gelding Whiskey Seven is bred to be a black-type winner and he’s heading in that direction after an astonishing debut in New York on Saturday.

The Stonewall Farm homebred was tailed off and detached from the main pack approaching the home turn before producing a whirlwind finish to win a 1200-metre maiden in 1.07.80s on turf at Belmont Park.

Whiskey Seven (3g War Chant - Lady Rapper by Grand Slam) is trained by Linda Rice for owner-breeders Barry and Sheryl Swartz.  They also raced his older half-sister Princess Violet to a Group 1 victory in the Madison Stakes (1400m) at Keeneland last year.

War Chant (USA) won the G1 Breeders Cup Turf Mile at Churchill Downs and sired over 30 stakes winners while based at Three Chimneys Farm before shuttling to Yarradale Stud in 2011.

Yarradale Stud owner Ron Sayers bought him outright in 2014 to stand permanently in WA.  His first Australian crop includes Silent Sedition who was last seen finishing second in the G1 Australasian Oaks before going out for a winter spell.

A black-type career also awaits Whiskey Seven and the Swartzs who operate Stonewall Farm in Granite Springs, New York.  It’s a 750-acre property that was formerly owned by the Rockefellers.

“I grew up in a one-room apartment with my father in the Bronx,” Swartz recalled.  “And I’ve been coming to the Belmont Park races since I was 15.

“I met Sheryl on a blind date at the Roosevelt Raceway trots and we got married in 1968.  But the honeymoon only lasted three days because I lost all our money on the crap tables.”

Fortunately, Swartz had already given a friend $10,000 to start up a clothing store that became an empire now worth over $8 billion.  They named the company after his childhood friend from the Bronx - Calvin Klein.
