Frost Giant colt West Hills Giant landed his third black-type victory in the $100,000 Cab Calloway Stakes (1600m) on turf at Saratoga on Wednesday.

The free-wheeling chestnut was second over the line but was elevated after stewards ruled front-runner Orino had caused sufficient interference in the straight to alter the placings.

His sire Frost Giant (Giant’s Causeway) will start covering his first southern book for a $9,900 (inc gst) service fee at Yarradale Stud next month.

West Hills Giant (3c Frost Giant – Outtawesthills by Take Me Out) started an odds-on favourite at Saratoga after a last-start victory in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes (1400m) at Belmont in June.

Given the run of the race by Edgar Prado, he railed up and was almost on even terms with Orino when the leader forced him on to fence.  “I would have won the race if not impeded,” Prado told officials.  “My horse was gaining when the contact happened.”

Daily Racing Form reporter Mike Welsch believed stewards had little recourse but to reverse the original order of finish.  So did West Hills Giant’s trainer John Terranova.  “The head-on showed he bounced off the rail and broke stride,” Terranova said.  “I thought we had a good shot of being placed first.”

Yarradale Stud owner Ron Sayers sourced Frost Giant for Western Australia after a record-breaking freshman year in 2012.  He’s already established a sizeable lead for New York’s second-season title and is bubbling just under the Top 10 in the North American premiership.

Frost Giant’s breakout success at Keane Stud has also paved the way for his younger brother Heavy Breathing to stand at stud.

Heavy Breathing was trained by Todd Pletcher for two wins at Gulfstream Park prior to a G3 placing in the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.  He will stand at Dutchess View Farm in Pine Plains, New York.
