Lost Heritage will head straight to town after winning against the odds at Northam this week.
The Brent Albuino trained gelding overcame a wide draw to defeat front-runner Mr African in the Southern Stars Saddlery Maiden (1100m). Specked into $20 with Jordan Mallyon aboard, he ran right up to some impressive trial form on debut.
“I was pretty confident he would go alright,” Albuino said. “The only worry was the gate.”
Lost Heritage (3g Heritage - Los Pelambres by Citidancer) was forced to cover extra ground as expected and then produced a powerful finish to level up with the leader and score by a half-length.
The win was just what the doctor ordered for Albuino who has been battling the flu. “I liked him at the Magic Millions and when he didn’t make a $20,000 reserve we struck a 50-50 deal with Yarradale Stud. He kept going shinny last season but is growing up now and will get over more ground.
“He can be a handful – not nasty – just a bit spooky. He dropped Jordan on the way back to scale on Wednesday.”
Albuino will nominate Lost Heritage next up for Ascot on Melbourne Cup day. He trains the gelding for Brian Rich and Sonia Fisher along with Yarradale Stud’s Ron Sayers.
His dam Los Pelambres won a Dongara maiden and worked her way up to an Ascot victory on the same day Scenic Shot and Daka's Gem dead-heated in the 2006 C B Cox Stakes. The mare has a yearling filly by Scandal Keeper.
Heritage is enjoying his best start to a season with Woken leading the charge. He has won 3 from 4 starts at Belmont this season and can add another when racing returns to Ascot this Saturday.
Comeback galloper Flying Heritage is also in action at Ascot for the first time since winning a Pinjarra sprint in November 2011. He first-up rivals include boom galloper Smoko.
Heritage (Flying Spur) stands for a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee. Yarradale offers a wide-range of discounts to broodmare owners this year. For further information call the stud office on (08) 9574 6490.
