War Chant is up and running with his first Australian-bred winner after Hello Sayang bolted in by five lengths at Perak on Saturday.
Hello Sayang (Aus) was ridden by former Perth apprentice Henry Barnabas to defeat a field of older horses on debut in the Little Pappa Stakes (1400m). She was eased down on the line but still spaced NZ bred three year-olds Wang Cai (My Halo) and Amongst The Stars (Bachelor Duke).
Hello Sayang (2f War Chant - Silvercup Baby by American Chance) was purchased by trainer K L Chong for $60,000 at the 2013 Adelaide Magic Millions. She is the first foal of a USA bred mare who was a New York stakes winner at Saratoga and Belmont.
Silvercup Baby was covered by War Chant to southern hemisphere time in Kentucky and exported to Australia in February 2011. She foaled Hello Sayang the following September in the Hunter Valley.
War Chant (Danzig) has shuttled to Western Australia for the last three years in a deal between Three Chimneys Farm and leading local breeders Ron Sayers (Yarradale Stud) and Eddie Rigg (Geisel Park).
His first Sunspeed yearlings sold to $250,000 at the 2014 Perth Magic Millions at a record average of $97,000.
K L Chong has been a regular visitor to Perth and paid $120,000 for yearlings from Mogumber Stud (2), Bellbridge Park and Kintore Stud at last year’s Magic Millions.
