Improving colt Frost Jordan signalled another successful year for Frost Giant (USA) when he rolled to a three-length victory at Belmont Park last Saturday.
A Group 1 winning son of Giant’s Causeway, Frost Giant (USA) was Champion first and second season sire in New York and he returns to Yarradale Stud for a $9,000 (plus gst) service fee in 2014.
Frost Jordan (3c Frost Giant – She Might Call by Family Calling) cost $60,000 at the Ocala 2YO Sale in April last year and he broke through second time out at Aqueduct on December 31.
Trainer Michael Hushion gave the colt a couple of preps this year before he drew away from an allowance field over 1700m last Saturday.
That result came a day after Gerry With A G won his maiden over 1000m at Arlington Park. He’s a Frost Giant half-brother to Next Question who was a Group 1 winner of the 2012 Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine.
Frost Jordan’s stablemate Loki’s Vengeance is one of three Frost Giants entered for stakes races at Belmont this Saturday as part of the Big Apple Showcase Day.
Loki’s Vengeance (3c Frost Giant – Subtle Sweetness by During) is coming off a Listed victory in the Times Square Stakes (1300m) at Aqueduct on last month. “He’s a fast horse,” Hushion said. “But his pedigree says he should go further (than 1300m).”
He faces a much stiffer test in the LR Mike Lee Stakes (1400m) on Saturday. Among his rivals is Uncle Sigh who was last seen leading the Kentucky Derby field into the stretch at Churchill Downs.
The Mike Lee Stakes is the first-leg of the Big Apple Triple Crown. The remaining legs are the New York Derby (1700m) at Finger Lakes on July 12 and the Albany Stakes (1800m) at Saratoga on August 24.
Frost Giant’s other representatives on Saturday are Frosty Bay in the LR Mt Vernon Stakes (1600m) and Comandante in the LR Commentator Hcp (1600m).
