Soldier’s Lass appreciated the drop back from black-type company to snare the Ultimate Sports Day Hcp (1200m) at Belmont on Saturday.

The Yarradale Stud homebred had been unplaced in the Listed Beaufine Stakes and Bolton Sprint in July.  “She’s a well-bred filly and we aimed high last month,” trainer Dan Morton said.  “We lowered the bar today and it was an excellent ride by Jerry (Noske).”

Soldier’s Lass is by Royal Ascot Group 1 winner Soldier’s Tale from South African Group 1 winner Arabian Lass.  She is a younger half-sister to LR Toowoomba Cup winner Musashi Of Mieko (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Perth sprinter Dash for Home (Dash for Cash).

Arabian Lass has a War Chant colt that made $60,000 at the 2014 Perth Magic Millions and a yearling filly by Scandal Keeper.

“I’ve always had a lot of time for Soldier’s Lass,” Morton revealed.  “She had leg issues early on but we persevered and finally got her going late last year.”

Soldier’s Lass won her maiden at Pinjarra last November and graduated to a Listed victory in the Matchmaker Classic (1400m) at Ascot in March.
