Trainer Colin Webster has been around too long to get carried away with last-start Belmont winner Settlers Creek.
The wily veteran wouldn’t commit when questioned about a G2 WA Guineas campaign. “I don’t want to get too excited,” Webster said after Settlers Creek won the Westspeed 3YO Hcp (1400m) last Saturday. “It has been discussed although he needs to keep improving.”
The $400,000 WA Guineas (1600m) will be run at Ascot on November 22. “We will play it by ear,” Webster said. “But wouldn’t it be a really nice race to win.”
Webster kept a share in Settlers Creek after paying $41,000 for the son of Yarradale Stud sire Discorsi at the 2013 Perth Magic Millions. So did Yarradale owner Ron Sayers along with Paz and Michelle Princi.
Settlers Creek (3g Discorsi - Three Sisters by Nuclear Freeze) raced without luck as a two year-old. “We bumped into Tonto at Pinjarra!” Webster recalled. “And then he ran enormous when blocked for runs in the (G3 WA) Sires’ Produce Stakes.
“Troy Turner has been very happy with him since a spell and his trial win here was an eye-catcher.”
Discorsi (Galileo) won the LR Gibson-Carmichael Stakes at Flemington and he is a half-brother to Group 1 winning mare Sea Siren and Champion WA sire Oratorio. He got the Belmont winner from a winning half-sister to Sydney G2 Sapphire Stakes winner Coolroom Candidate.
Yarradale stands Discorsi for a $3,500 (plus gst) service fee.
