Dick Vincent’s De Grey Park filled out a Belmont Park quinella on Wednesday when odds-on favourite Mulga won the Westspeed 3YO Hcp (1700m).

Mulga (Vital Equine) was a three-length maiden winner first-up at Northam last month and connections were confident stepping up to a midweek meeting in town.  Sent out a short $1.40 favourite, he ambled along off the pace and then got mobile when William Pike pushed the button at the top of the straight to defeat Major Mambo (War Chant).

Vincent bred both three year-olds and they are by stallions based at Yarradale Stud.

“I’ve liked Mulga since he was broken in,” trainer Bruce Watkins said.  “I will speak to Dick and I’m sure he will agree this horse needs to go out and mature.  He will make a nice racehorse next year.”

Vital Equine (Danetime) is currently covering his first book at Yarradale after an initial stint at Touchstone Farm.  He got the Belmont winner from LR Beaufine Stakes winner Lady Wild (Wild Harmony).

Lady Wild has a yearling filly from the first crop of Yarradale’s Shamardal stallion Gingerbread Man and she was bred back to Proart last year.

Vincent, 90, is the oldest commercial horse breeder in Western Australia and was awarded an AO in the Queen’s Birthday Honours earlier this year.  Dick and his wife Jan (pictured) are based in the south-west at Capel and have bred and horses like Barely A Moment (G1 Toorak Hcp) and Cadenza (Perth Magic Millions 2YO Classic).
