Denim Wars was balloted out of the $150,000 Grassroots Gallop (1400m) at Caulfield on Wednesday but that may be a blessing in disguise for part-owner and trainer Colin Scott.

The Pakenham-prepared son of War Chant (USA) didn’t get a start at the Group 1 meeting which attracted 130 acceptors over 9 races.  Scott took the precaution of also nominating him closer to home on Friday evening when he will attempt to make it a running double on Pakenham’s synthetic surface.

Scott had purchased Denim Wars from clients of Dan Morton last September and the 4yo won his maiden first-up at Pakenham in February.  He scored again at Echuca in May before another first-up home-town victory last month.

“He was our first winner here since moving from Caulfield,” Scott said.  “He’s genuine and a gentleman and it’s a pleasure having him around.  He’s a stable favourite and Luke (Nolen) likes him, too.  Peter Moody is just up the road from us, just like Caulfield, so Luke also rides him fast work.

“He goes on all surfaces and does whatever is asked.  I would like a stable full of horses with his attitude.”

Yarradale Stud sire War Chant got him from Calico Blue (Serheed) and he was a $100,000 Gidgegannup-graduate at the 2019 Perth Magic Millions.  His dam won 12 races and $400,000 topped by a LR Jungle Dawn Classic at Ascot and a Geraldton Cup for local owners Kim and Carol Fleay.

Calico Blue was pensioned by Yarradale last month after delivering a Gingerbread Man colt in August.  Her first Gingerbread Man foal Cambist won twice at Ascot and she was runner-up three times at Listed level.  Yarradale sent her to Alwyn Park for a maiden cover to Maschino last year.

Yarradale stands War Chant ($8,250) alongside Gingerbread Man ($5,500).  Both fees (inc GST).
