Aptly-named grey mare Lucky's Way took the short way home to land a late win in the Westspeed Platinum Hcp (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Clint Johnston-Porter elected to roll the dice with the daughter of Bradbury’s Luck and they weaved through the field from last on the corner to defeat Famous Jurney (Universal Ruler) and Wonder Weapon (Maschino).

Lucky's Way (4m Bradbury's Luck - Streak Away by O'Reilly) had been bloused out by Enchanting Sound (Gingerbread Man) at her penultimate start when the blinkers went back on for a similar Westspeed Platinum contest over 1200m.

“She has a quick turn of foot and, when the speed is on, the blinkers are more effective,” stable rep Kelly Kinninmont said.  “And that was a super ride by Clint.”  Kinninmont was standing in for trainer Simon Miller who was in Adelaide saddling Amelia’s Jewel for the final time in the G1 Goodwood (1200m).

“I was in a good spot three-wide with cover and then crossed to the rails at the 500m mark,” Johnston-Porter explained.  “No one wanted the fence but it’s the shortest way home.  Simon had her stepping out perfect today although she was in an annoying mood.  But when they’re like that - they usually win.

“She’s a real trier and hopefully the owners can pick up a few more races with her over the winter season at Belmont.”

Lucky's Way is by Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice) who has four yearling colts from his final crop conceived at Yarradale Stud.  She was bred and sold by Yarradale for $75,000 at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions and there’s ample residual value when she's retired to stud.

Her Playing God yearling half-sister sold for $180,000 to First Light Racing and Williams Racing at this year’s Perth Magic Millions.  Their dam Streak Away (NZ) has a Gingerbread Man filly foal and was bred back to Playing God last October.

Second-dam Brava Fortune (Falbrav) won the 2008 G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) in Yarradale’s colours as did third-dam Fortune Streak (Pricelessly) in the 2001 LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m).

Simon Miller farewelled Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni) last Saturday and he welcomes back another stable favourite this Saturday when Valour Road returns in the G3 Belmont Sprint (1400m).  The Yarradale-bred sprinter was last seen coming from last of 16 to finish sixth to Munhamek (GB) in the G3 Gold Rush (1400m) at Ascot in December

Valour Road (8g Frost Giant - Melba Avenue by Street Sense) registered the first of 9 black-type victories to date in the 2018 G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) and he warmed up for this Saturday with a Belmont barrier trial win on April 29.
