Trainer Peter Fernie is a perennial premiership winner in the Goldfields and he’s on track for another title leading into this year’s Kalgoorlie-Boulder Race Round.

Fernie has prepared doubles at the last three meetings with Sainty Cullity (Star Witness) & Door Buster (Snippetson) in July, Dance Version (All Too Hard) & Five Down (Better Than Ready) on August 9 and Twist Of Gold (Bondi) & Dont Wait For Luck (Nicconi) on August 23.

The season begins to build with the Coolgardie Cup (1600m) on Sunday week, September 6 and reaches a crescendo with the LR Boulder Cup (2100m) on September 20, LR Hannans Hcp (1400m) on October 1 and LR Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) on October 3.

Dont Wait For Luck is a 6yo son of Nicconi from Sentfromthestars (Northern Meteor) and has been something of a revelation this year.  All 8 of his wins have been on home turf and it’s hard to miss the location with race names like the Diggers And Dealers Hcp (1600m), Kalgoorlie Spud Shed Hcp (1600m) and Blue Spec Drilling Hcp (1300m).

He’s won four from six this prep and none better than a commanding victory in the Palace Hotel Gold Rush (1200m) last Sunday.  Shouldering 60kg, he was last in the three-wide line with cover before launching down the centre of the track to win with a length or two in hand for 2kg claimer Jefferson Tsang.

“He’s a good horse and that was a very good win,” Fernie said this week.  “He pulled up well and we will wait and see before going again.  He’s a better horse now and there’s more to work with being bigger and rounder.”

Yarradale Stud sold Dont Wait For Luck to Justin Warwick for $60,000 (as agent) at the 2022 Magic Millions Perth Winter Yearling Sale.

He’s from Sandown Lakeside winner Sentfromthestars and was a member of the Yarradale consignment on behalf of south-west breeder Ellie Giles.

“Ellie is a leading breeder and we’ve sold some top-class horses for her,” Yarradale manager Davy Hanratty recalled.  “Dont Wait For Luck was an athletic, good-looking chestnut colt as a yearling and he was a bit of a character, too.”

Initially sent to Mitch Pateman, he changed stables several times between Brandon Fiore and Fernie before Warwick downsized.  “We bought him for $9,500 at an Inglis Online Sale,” Fernie remembered. “My wife Karen races him and he’s won over $100,000 but I haven’t seen much of it yet!”

Yarradale team members have been busy in the foaling barn following a black filly by Ingratiating (Frosted) that was first arrive a fortnight ago.  Bred by Yarradale mentor Bernie Hamill, she's from City Place (USA) mare Chloyo whose earlier foals include unraced 3yo filly Poppy Dazzler (Splintex) with Rhys Radford and a yearling filly by A Lot (USA).

Yarradale is standing Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) and Gingerbread Man (Shamardal) for $5,500 (inc GST) service fees this season.   For all enquiries contact Davy Hanratty on 0429 336 904.
