Hong Kong based gelding Perfectday scored a dominant victory to complete a double for WA-bred expats in the last race of the Sha Tin season on Sunday.
The Chris So trained sprinter produced a powerful winning sprint to notch his fourth win from 11 starts in the All You Wish Hcp (1400m). He followed Impressive Racing-bred veteran Beauty Joy who landed the HK Racehorse Owners Trophy (1600m) earlier inthe day for trainer Tony Cruz.
Perfectday is a son of Yarradale Stud sire Gingerbread Man and NZ-bred mare Sonata (Bahhare) who won races on either side of the Tasman at Avondale, Hastings and Geelong. He was sold by Boyanup-based Einoncliff Park owners Wayne and Jane Beynon (as agent) for $50,000 through their consignment to the 2023 Perth Magic Millions.
“He was an average-sized colt but sensible and straightforward,” Jane recalled. “He was bred by Keith Watson jnr and we look after another one of his mares Universal Appeal (Universal Ruler).”
Universal Appeal has a filly foal by St Mark's Basilica (Fr) that also increased in value on Sunday when the Coolmore Stud shuttler sired first-crop colt Thesecretadversary to win the G1 Prix Jean Prat (1400m) at Deauville.
Perfectday was purchased by agent Merrick Staunton who has strong ties with Hong Kong and was sent offshore in October 2024. The $50,000 price-tag was a snip considering he’s already won the equivalent of AUD 730,000 for Choi Yui Hin and Daniel Choi Yui Fai.
“He won at his second start here but was sidelined for six months after going down with a high fever,” Chris So explained. “There was no pressure from the owners but we had to start from the beginning again.”
Perfectday is the flag-bearer for Gingerbread Man in Hong Kong following the retirement of Ima Single Man who banked the equivalent of $2.14 million for Fion Luk Sin Fong.
Beauty Joy blitzed his rivals in the HK Racehorse Owners Trophy (1600m) to earn another season under saddle in 2026-27. Foaled in November 2016, he was bred by Impressive Racing partners Kevin Berry and Darren McAuliffe and was shipped off-shore following an unbeaten Ascot hat-trick in March 2020.
“He will race again next season,” trainer Tony Cruz confirmed. “The owners Patrick and Eleanor Kwok are happy for him to keep going.”
Beauty Joy is by Sebring (More Than Ready) from Impressive Jeuney (Jeune) who won the G3 WA Oaks (2400m) in 2010. Winning jockey Hugh Bowman eased him around a wall of horses at the furlong before letting down to defeat Max Que (Akeed Mofeed).
“I knew I had plenty of horse and the pace had been on,” Bowman said. “I had enough time and once we balanced up on the outside I was very confident of winning. He was the first good one that I rode when I moved to Hong Kong and he’s been a really solid horse, not only for me, but the entire organisation.”
